The record is back home - a tower of LEGO bricks reached 31,39 meters this friday. Visitors of LEGOLAND helped build the tower - some for a short break while visiting the park and others for hours putting bricks together to reach the record.
The tower was originally to be built at the event area, but it was not allowed as it would interfere with the air traffic at the near by airport. Instead it was built at the entrance.
The old record was 31,16 meters and was built in São Paulo, Brazil this april. You can see a list of the old record holders here - along with several other crazy LEGO records.
All that helped received a nice diploma.

Billund Trotting Track
I never went to a trotting track before, so when they invited everyone for a Childrensday yesterday I packed my camera and went to check it out.
Conclusion: it's a lot like on film with the speakers filling the track with nonsense and endlessly long horse names. It is however not high class people with big hats and tiny drinks spending the day at the track, but rather ordinary people with children, french fries and LOTS of Curry Ketchup.
I still have no idea about how to play, but I'm sure that the people in the main building would be happy to help me out. If I wasn't able to understand Danish I would however be hesitant to even try it, as the speaker, the boards and the written material all was in Danish. What a shame.
If you want to go to the tracks yourself, you can see the dates with events on the season plan.
Admission is free, so is the parking - unless you want to park right at the track, which is 20 Dkr.

LEGOLAND: Falck Fire Brigade
Today the fire brigade had reinforcements from real life. In a big fire and rescue show one could see a car set to fire and then put out and another car cut open. There were also competitions and a big display of various fire brigade trucks.
Jesper from last years X-factor also gave a concert and signed autographs.
Apart from the long line at the seasonpass shop I think LEGOLAND had a very successful event and I sure hope they will repeat it next year. It could be even better if all the trucks were presented with a bit more informative material about the trucks use and history.
On my way home from LEGOLAND i saw a big cloud of smoke in the sky - the real life firebrigade was at work putting out a fire in a forrest only 10 km away. Maybe LEGOLAND should have lend out a hand or two? :)

LEGOLAND: Atlantis
Star Wars isn't the only new thing in LEGOLAND this summer - we also have a new monster! Entering a building in the middle of main land Denmark will bring you underground to a hidden submarine station. Here you will be transported to the long lost continent, Atlantis. Deep below the water you will be walking under glass looking up at all the wonderful creatures of the sea and the ruins of the lost society. Oh, and some LEGO guys goofing around in the water of course.
Back to the monster. You probably missed it in the pictures. It's the big crab in picture two. It is huge, but looks pretty harmless behind glass as it just sits there. None the less it goes by the name CRABZILLA. Yes, all in caps.
I never visit LEGOLAND without going through Atlantis. Even if the introduction seems painfully long after a while, I find the atmosphere under the water to be just breathtaking. Go there!

LEGOLAND: Star Wars
New this season is the STAR WARS area of Miniland. 1.5 million LEGO bricks are put together to picture the seven themes from the movies (one is from the animated TV series, The Clone Wars): The battle of Naboo, Theed and Geonosis Arena, where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker fights beasts, or Uncle Owens farm on the desert planet Tatooine, where Luke Skywalker grew up.
The commercials for this new area in LEGOLAND brags about bringing you to a galaxy far, far away with a big, interactive scenary. It is worth a visit, but don't get your hopes up too high. The interactivity is - like most in Miniland - a button to play a sound or move a character a bit; nothing to get excited about. The size or events of the area did not live up to my expectations either, but my pictures should give an idea of what to expect. Good news is that it isn't far, far away: it's actually pretty close to the entrance ;)

LEGOLAND! - all in caps :)
Don't go to Billund without visiting LEGOLAND at least once. Sure, it is an amusementpark aimed at families with children, but the miniatures of buildings from all over the world makes it worth your time who ever you are. With LEGO bricks, creativity and a bit of loving humour everything from the Statue of Liberty to a small railway station outside Billund is portrayed and will bring you around the world in a few hours.
If you are into the whole amusementpark thing, make start out at LEGOLANDs website. Here you can get a good view of the activities, events, opening hours and much more. Furthermore you can book time at some of the activities and jump ahead in line - highly recommendable in the best season.
I plan on bringing a post in this blog for each area of LEGOLAND, as it is just too big to fit into one in my opinion. On opening day - last saturday, April 2nd - I visited the park and took pictures of the new STAR WARS area of Miniland, which I will dedicate my next post to.

Lalandia
Admittedly Denmark does have very changing weather, but what does that matter when we have Lalandia. One second you are out in the cold, murky Billund - the next you are in a warm late-night italian village. Magic! What used to be office buildings are now made into a holiday paradise with restaurants, water play land, arcade, sports facilities, shops and more.
The first time visiting will probably impress you, but make sure to have other plans up your sleeve for the rest of your holiday. You will soon enough see through this buildings disguise - and have your ears begging to get away from the concrete walls and ceiling reflecting music, childrens laughter and people chattering into one big pile of noise.

Billund Airport
Even if I have been living in Billund nearly a year now, I still stop and stare at the sky whenever I hear the sound of a plane. It is just so fascinating how a stiff heavy pile of metal can hover above you in the distance with such elegance.
At Båstlundvej you can see that I am not the only one sneaking a peak. The signs along the road says it's prohibited to pull over, but the grass clearly tells that a lot of people disregard the rules and enjoy the view of the planes.
I would of course never ever encourage you to break the law, but would like to mention that it is best to do so when the wind is comming from the west. Planes have safer lift offs and landings when flying straight against the wind and when driving on Båstlundvej, Billund west wind gives the best view of planes in lift off.

City Center
A good place to start is taking a tour in the shopping area of the city. Billund offers a little bit of everything, so even if the centre is quite small it is a place worth a visit anyway.
Here you can buy clothes, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics - anything your heart desires - or the stomach for that matter. With pizzarias, restaurants and cafes, one should not have to leave hungry.
Google Streetview offers a good opportunity to get acquainted with the city centre - this link starts out at the town square.
